The overwhelming majority of

interviewees are of the oninion

that Britain has a moral obligation to the Hong Kong residents.

A high percentage of the interviewees consider that looking after the Hong Kong residents is a joint responsibility for both China and Dritain.

Nearly all the interviewees consider that the prime consideration when making decisions on the future of Hong Kong should be taken into account the wishes and interests of Hong Kong people while lationalism should be of secondary

consideration only.

It is of paramount importance that the final Sino-British Agreement should take the rights of Hong Kong residents into consideration.

Whether Hong Kong people administering themselves" and the "continuation of social systems after 1997" are going to work depends on the detailed specifications

of the final agreements and both Governments must work to fulfill such objectives.

Most residents are worried that the interest of the Hong Kong people might be ignored when the final Sino--British agreuments are hammered out.

Many of the respondents indicate that they will make arrangements to emigrate as the result of lacking confidence in the future, but a greater number of people indicate that they will for various reasons stay in Hong Kong after 1997.
