Data from Table 1.6 showed that those in favour of "Hong Kong people self-rule", i.e. 90.3% (86.3%), at the same time demanded a democratically elected policy-making body at the highest level. Those in favour of the choice of the highest executive being elected constitute 79.3% (68.9%) of the respondents. (Table 1-7) Among those who favour "Continuation of British rule", 89.1% (88.2%) demanded that if the "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong" model must be implemented, the whole of, or the majority of members of the highest level of policy-making body should be elected. Those who demanded the choice of the governor by election was 80.1% (77.9%). This indicated that most people who would support a future model which would embody democratic elections as a means to form the policy-making body.
In sum, results from the first four questions have the following implications:
1. Majority of the residents favoured "Hong
Kong people self-rule", and would accept or partially accept "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong" as a

future arrangement for the political structure of Hong Kong.
2. More support would be gained from local
residents, if the model was to be based on democratic election.
(2) Worries for the post-1997 period
(i) Among the different situations as listed
on question 5, what the respondents worried most was that the People's Republic of China may interfere with the internal administration of Hong Kong (Mail questionaires: 84.1%, interviews: 68.9%). Whereas for the other five situations, the respor.se of "worrying" tended to be on the high side (over 60% of mail questionaires and 40% of interviews). (table 2)
(ii) Half of the respondents considered
"Hong Kong people self-rule" is the most ideal governing model. However, they were very worried that the Chinese government may interfere with the internal administration of Hong Kong. The findings demonstrated a high correlation between the respondents' choice of an ideal governing model and what they were worrying about. The
