N.B.: A marked difference on the response to questions of a sensitive nature has been identified between two data collection methods, namely mail questionaire and interview. The data collected by respective methods are thus listed side by side throughout the report for comparison purpose.

1. On the future political structure in

post-1997, residents generally accept a framework of "Hong kong people administering Hong Kong" which should be based on democratic election.

58.1% (67.2%)1 of the respondents of mail questionaires have chosen "Hong Kong people self-rule"2 as an ideal political structure after 1997. If the "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong"3 model is the only alternative, then only 11% (2.7%) will not accept, the rest will accept or partially accept.

Over 80% of the respondents consider that to implement the "Hong Kong people

administering Hong Kong" model, the whole of, or the majority of the members of the highest level of policy-making body must be chosen by election. They hold the same view for the appointment of the future chief executive or governor.

Even though the model of "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong" is accepted, the majority of the residents have worries over the intervention into Hong Kong's internal administration by the People's Republic of China.

84.1% (68.9%) of the respondents have worries over the interference into Hong Kong's internal administration by the Chinese Government. Other related worries include: the lack of independent of the judicial system, drastic changes in the economic system, the abduction of personal liberty and citizen rights and a decline in living standard.

'Figures in brackets are results of questionaires completed through interviews with randomly selected households.

2"Hong Kong people self-rule" refers to a loosely

defined concept of self-rule by Hong Kong citizens.

3"Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong"

model refers to the model formally originated by the People's Republic of China.
