1997. Concern was expressed at the loss of various freedoms that the poll suggested. Concern was also expressed about Chinese interference but this was after the poll specifically mentioned this possibility.
With regard to measures to be adopted by the authorities during the transitional period, respondants were asked specifically should there be gradual democratisation, should the people's livelihood be
improved. Although the way these questions are phrased so as to encourage the answer "yes", the fractions of those asked who did say "yes" seems surprisingly low to me (only 45% for democratisation, 67% in favour of having their livelihood improved). Similar impartiality when asked about the drafting of the Basic Law. For example, when asked specifically, only 56% said that the Basic Law should be fully discussed by the people of Hong Kong before being endorsed, and only 57% thought that Hong Kong representatives should take part in the drafting of the Basic Law.
EASTERN BOARD DISTRICT POLL:
Details of this poll are very scant and it is hard to draw any meaningful results. Questions, to me, seem phrased to encourage answers that defend the rights of the people of Hong Kong and that condemn anybody who might disregard their interests.

The opinion was strongly expressed that Britain had moral obligations to the people of Hong Kong.
The wishes of the people of Hong Kong was by far the most important factor in deciding the future of Hong Kong.
If any agreement reached proves unacceptable to the people of Hong Kong, their rights (and not the British/Chinese Governments) should be given by far the most consideration.
On an encouraging note, 60% of people thought "self administration for Hong Kong and no change in the social system for 50 years" was feasible but the majority said that this depended on the concrete details.
