From the views expressed on the procedures fór drafting,
adoption and future revision of the "basic laws", the students obviously
affirmed that a role should be played by the people of Hong Kong which
would form an important foroe striving for our personal interests and
protection of our interests.
The majority favoured democratisation before 1997
The future form of government in Hong Kong will be the most
important factor in the protection of Hong Kong people's rights and
interests and will show the Chinese Government's sincerity in removing
the Hong Kong people's anxieties.
Kore than one-third of the students (34.7%) opined that the
"administrative head" after 1997 "should be elected by all the people
of Hong Kong", meanwhile 17.6 per cent advocated an election by all the
people of Hong Kong and approved by the Chinese Goverment. Regarding
the ways of producing members of the "Hong Kong Hunicipal Council", 1972
students, i.e. 84 per cent of the respondents, ɑhose the answer: "to be
elected by all the people of Hong Kong" as their first preferences. Other
options "to be elected by the 'representative organizations' of Hong
Kong", "to be appointed by the administrative head" and "to be appointed
by the Chinese Government" were ranked low in importance.
Judging from the views expressed on the ways of electing the
administrative head and members of the Hong Kong Municipal Council, the
students were in favour of a government by popular election which
undoubtedly stemmed from an earnest desire for "democratic self-rule" in
