Future of Hong Kong:

Assessment of Public Opinion

Thank you for your letter of 12th

January 1984.

2.

We shall certainly meet this commitment on a monthly basis and I hope that the first effort will be prepared by, say, mid-February and we shall send further editions to you monthly thereafter. Special research exercises will not be necessary for we receive now a fairly steady stream of material on public opinion, civil service morale, the state of business confidence, so on so forth. But compressing it into readable form, and in such a way as to offer a balanced picture, will not be all that easy and, therefore, I hope you will let us know if any particular emphasis or slant puzzles you.
