The purpose of this memorandum is to advice the proposed resumption of

on

of land Territories for the construction of an aqueduct to Ngau Tam Mei.

Background

2

To maintain the continuity of water supply to areas situated in the north-western part of the New Territories during the months of March and April each year when water

each supply from China will not be available, the Director of Water Supplies proposes to reinforce the water supply available from Tai Lam Chung Reservoir by way of an aqueduct to transfer water to these areas from the Plover Cove Reservoir in Tai Po via the Water Pumping Station at Tai Po Tau and the water supply system at Ngau Tam Mei,

Yuen Long. The aqueduct, about seven kilometres in its

its total length, will be in the form of a two-metre diameter wide underground pipeline for its initial one kilometre section between Tai Po Tau and Lam Tsuen, and a two-and-a-half-metre diameter wide tunnel for the

the remaining section from Lam Tsuen to the water supply system at Ngau Tam Mei, Yuen Long. Construction of this aqueduct forms the remaining part of the Future Increase of Water Supply from China Stage II project which is in Category 'A' of the Public Works Programme under item No. WS 50. Resumption of private land is now necessary to enable engineering works to begin in April 1984. The project will take 30 months to complete.
