1. You will see from the enclosed correspondence that the organisers are again seeking the presence of Mr Norman Tebbit at their Symposium in 1985.

2. Mr Tebbit attended the 1984 Symposium and was also present two or three years before that. It is rather unlikely therefore that he will seek my advice on whether to attend in 1985, but if he should do so, I would encourage him to attend.

3. If your Department's view is sought, you may wish to know that my views were conveyed in letters of 25 October and 8 February 1983 to your predecessors. After attending the last two Symposia, I am tempted to dismiss the whole affair as a gigantic confidence trick and hot air machine. It has to be admitted however that the senior people in Switzerland take it very seriously and that it would be unfortunate for the United Kingdom not to be represented by a Minister, however briefly.
