1 I attach (for those providing substantive briefs) the letter from the Cabinet Office commissioning briefs for the Summit. The list no longer specifies departmental responsibility within the FCO: I trust that this will be self-evident, but please contact me if there are any doubts.

The general brief has been written. I should be grateful if 70 copies of the substantive briefs (nos 3-9) could reach Mr Musgrave (W66 233 3266) by close of play on Thursday 22 November. Please follow the format at Annex C precisely, particularly the 11" margin on the left. You might find it useful, before going to Document Reproduction, to have the final format checked by
Mr Musgrave. Inaccurately presented briefs will not be accepted by Cabinet Office.
Briefing for the Secretary of State
3. On subjects other than those covered in briefs 3-9, the Secretary of State will need a separate brief for his discussions with Cheysson. However, given the frequency of our contacts with the French (particularly the recent State Visit) Private Office have asked for nothing more than a substantive checklist for the Secretary of State's use. This WED will provide on the basis of your contributions to the General Brief
