register.

The Government therefore intends to introduce a

central computerised ship register which will provide a

better service to the shipowner at economic costs.

Applications

for registration and other related transactions will be made

by post to a central point, but arrangements will be made

for the register to be inspected at a small number of commercial

centres in the UK. These will include London but no decision

has been taken on the number and locations of others. The

views of those concerned would be welcome. Although centrali-

sation will mean that the old "ports of registry" will

disappear, they will be replaced by a list of "home ports"

from which applicants will be required to select one for the

purpose of registering a ship. The name of the home port will

be marked on the stem of the ship in the same way as the port

of registry appears under the present system.
