VISIT OF DEPUTY OPPOSITION LEADER, AUSTRALIAN HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
1. Mr Steele Hall MP will be visiting Britain as a Category I sponsored visitor to Britain from 26 January to 11 February. Mr Hall is Deputy Leader of the Liberal Opposition in the House of Representatives and Shadow Minister of State with Special Responsibilities. He has long been close to the Liberal Leader,
Mr Peacock, and was formerly Premier of South Australia.
2.
We have recommended that Mr Whitney gives a lunch for Mr Hall on 8 February and I shall be asking Mr Donald to chair the discussion of bilateral questions. But Mr Hall has also requested oral briefing on:
European defence; NATO policies towards Eastern Europe EC and the Pacific
British view of the Middle East

Hong Kong
(e)
China
3. I propose to hold briefing talks in Room WH MZ 24 (adjacent to South Pacific Department) on the morning of Wednesday 8 February and I wonder if you could then spare 15-20 minutes
to talk to Mr Hall. We could arrange a precise timetable nearer the date.
4.
I would just add that in 1983 a group of Australian Liberals on a sponsored visit complained that they had seen too many officials at too low a level.
