DK battle report A Vietnamese regiment launched a two-pronged attack against us on Koh Kong Leu battlefield on 30th November. The first prong was aimed at Hill 302 and the second prong was launched at an area in front of Hill 217 east [words indistinct]. Following two days of fighting, we killed 124 Vietnamese soldiers and wounded 72 others. We destroyed one DK-75, one 60mm mortar, 81 AKs, and some war materiel. (VONADK 2315 gmt 3 Dec 84)

Lao women allegedly forced to marry Vietnamese soldiers According to reports from Laos, on 13th November, 24 Lao women in Soukouma district were forced to marry Vietnamese soldiers who are occupying Laos. However, nine women, in protest, fled to join Lao National Liberation Front guerrillas. (VONADK 2315 gmt 29 Nov 84)

Ji Pengfei on Sino-British Talks on Hongkong

Text of report, "Excerpts from talk by Director Ji Pengfei to 'Ming Pao' publisher Cha Liang-yung on 18th October in the Great Hall of the People":

Li Pengfei, Director of the Hongkong and Macao Affairs Office under the State Council was interviewed by Director Cha Liang-Yung of 'Ming Pao' at the Anhui Hall in the Great Hall of the People on the afternoon of 18th October; participating in the interview were Deputy Director Li Hou and consultant Wang Kuang of the office. When the interview was over, Director Ji held a banquet in honour of Mr and Mrs Cha Liang-Yung and their daughter. During the interview and in the course of the banquet, Director Ji discussed the Sino-British talks and all aspects of the negotiation in detail, and cited many examples to illustrate the formation and determination of the Peking authorities on such important concepts as "one country, two systems" and "remaining unchanged in the next 50 years", and the bright prospects for the development of Sino- British relations.

The following are excerpts of Director Ji's talk:

(1) On Sino-British talks

According to Director Ji, the requirement to solve the Hongkong issue was formally put forward by the British Prime Minister during her visit to China in 1982. Hongkong is an international city. In order to maintain its status, we have decided on 12 principles and policies in solving the Hongkong issue based on the concept of "one country, two systems"; and these 12 principles and policies became the basis on which we carried out our talks with the United Kingdom. In our talks, our only demand was to- abolish things colonialist, and we would take economic interests into full consideration. Regarding the results of the talks, both parties are satisfied.

The success of the Sino-British talks is owed chiefly to our mutual trust. If talks- are necessary, they must be done well. The maintenance of Hongkong's prosperity and stability through our joint efforts will be advantageous to the development of Sino- British relations.

(2) On Confidence

According to Director Ji, at present, many Hongkong people do not have a clear understanding of the policies and situation of the mainland. It is hoped that they will
