FUTURE OF HONG KONG: CORRESPONDENCE FROM DR RA DUNCAN
Thank you for your letter of 10 April enclosing one
from your constituent, Dr R A Duncan of 2 Bar Road,
Falmouth, who is currently working in Hong Kong. Dr Dunc:
epicessed concern that with the approach of 1997 his and
other expatriates' job prospects here might be
threatened by an influx of Hong Kong Chinese with
professional qualifications.
As you will know, confidential Sino-British talks
on Hong Kong's future are taking place in Peking with the
common aim of maintaining Hong Kong's stability and
prosperity. Our objective in the talks is to seek a
negotiated settlement which will fulfil this aim and be
acceptable to Parliament, the Chinese Government and the
people of Hong Kong.
We are closely in touch, through many channels, with
opinion in Hong Kong and we are deeply conscious of the
