KLAUS BARBIE AND THE FUTURE OF HONG KONG
1. On 28 January Chinese TV provided an interesting illustration of the way in which the Chinese population is being gently introduced to the possibility of Hong Kong's return to the motherland. The TV news reported latest developments in the Barbie case. The camera focussed on an English language press report on this subject then panned back to reveal the rest of the newspaper: the Sunday Times of 22 January with the headline "Thatcher hands over Hong Kong to China" standing out clearly. This shot was held for at least ten seconds. I think we may safely assume that the Barbie case is of less than consuming interest to the Chinese but on this occasion provided a useful peg upon which to hang a bit of Hong Kong "news". A piece of sub-editing of which the revered correspondent Lunchtime O'Maotai himself would have been proud.
