The Rt. Hon. Sir Geoffrey Howe, QC, MP

Secretary of State for Foreign &

Commonwealth Affairs

c/o Government House HONG KONG

Dear Geoffrey,

1st August, 1984.

It was a real pleasure seeing you at the Governor's dinner yesterday upon your return from Beijing. You looked very well despite a very demanding schedule but I was sorry that we did not have much chance for a private word together.

May I congratulate you again on the apparently very success- ful negotiations you have had with the Chinese leadership on the two current issues on which the British and Chinese sides had seemed to face difficulties in reaching an agree- ment.

I am glad that things have turned out much in the way I had anticipated they would. I was amused to note that Mr. Zhou Nan coincidently shared my way of alluding to the results of your visit when he made the same remark on your departure as I wrote on the little fan I sent you last week.

These positive results will no doubt enable the Prime Minister to chart a course of further action in the best interests of Hong Kong and of the Sino-British relationship in the years ahead.

With warmest regards and wishing you a pleasant journey home,

N
