David,

Visit to Hong Kong and Peking

The Prime Minister has already agreed in principle to a visit by Sir Geoffrey to Hong Kong and Peking for further discussions on the future of Hong Kong. Dates have now been agreed with the Chinese.

Sir Geoffrey will leave London for Hong Kong during the morning of Wednesday 25 July and return early morning on Thursday 2 August. He will be accompanied by two Private Secretaries and two officials.

I should be grateful to know whether the Prime Minister is content with these arrangements subject to Government and Parliamentary business. Sir Geoffrey will need to be excused from Cabinet on 26 July and would like Lady Young to represent him if this is acceptable.

I am copying this letter to Murdo Maclean (Chief Whip's Office) and Lindsay Wilkinson (Cabinet Office).

David Barclay Esq 10 Downing Street

Yours over,

Alison

(A J Walters)
