"ADMINISTRATION IN CONFIDENCE
AUS DUTY TRAVEL BUDGETS
1. Mr Hannaby (PSD)'s minute of 20 September. I attach for your reference a copy of my minute of 22 August setting out this Department's requirements for the remainder of the current financial year. We have written to Hong Kong to ask them to start work on an outline programme for Miss Walker's visit.
2. I would like to make the following bid for 1984/85:
(a) two visits by Head of Department. This has been the policy
for some years, although I have not recently been able to keep to it. Given that I may need to travel to Hong Kong or Peking in connection with the talks, it might even be necessary to go more often.
(b)
3.
Mr Williams
Two visits by other members of the Department. has recently joined us as a Desk Officer in the Hong Kong section and it is important that he, like Miss Walker, should visit Hong Kong. I expect Mr Morris to be replaced as Head of the Future section within the next six months and it would be useful for his successor to make a visit. If by any chance he is already familiar with Hong Kong, Mrs Priest could go instead.
The estimated cost of these visits is as follows:
(a) Four return passages (Club class)
(b)
Subsistence at Class A rate
(i) 2 visits of 10 days (ii) 2 visits of 14 days
