Wo Che Estate is the second public housing estate built on the reclaimed land of Shatin New Town. It covers a site of 15.5 hectares. It was first occupied in mid-1977 and was fully let in April 1980.

The estate was well planned with domestic blocks evenly located. The spacious 6.4 hectares rest/recreation ground forms part of the attractive environment. There are twelve 13-24-storey high domestic blocks, providing 6,075 self-contained flats. The population is 32,745. All the units are provided with communal television aerial and piped gas and other essential services. Flat sizes range from 27.13 sq.m. to 58.16 sq.m. and the monthly rental varies from $332 (30) to $686 (562) representing eight per cent of the average household income of tenants of the estate or 20% of the estimated market rental.

One special feature of the estate is the segregation of pedestrian and vehicular traffic with all the domestic blocks linked to the commercial and other buildings by covered foot-bridges.

All the commercial facilities are concentrated in the four- storey commercial centre which is favourably located in the heart of the estate. The Commercial Centre which is centrally air-conditioned on 2/F and 3/F has been designed to accommodate 73 arcade shop units
(61 tenancies), including two banks, a supermarket/department store and two restaurants. On the ground floor there are 18 shops and 98 shop stalls. In addition, 12 cooked-food stalls, a furniture show- room and a Police Reporting Centre are also located on this floor. The garage on the G/F and 1/F provides 331 parking spaces for monthly letting and hourly visitors use. All commercial premises are let at fair market value.

The roof podium deck of the commercial centre has been designed to house most of the welfare premises of the estate, namely the Community Hall, a Centre for the Elderly, the Clinic of Family Planning Association, a Youth and Children Centre, a Study Centre and the Community and Youth Office of Social Welfare Department. In the domestic blocks, there are designated sites for one Hostel for the Disabled, one Nursery, one Youth Centre, one Children Centre and one Training Centre for the Mentally Retarded.
is also a School for the Handicapped. Other educational facilities include three Secondary Schools, four Primary Schools and three Kindergartens.
