Other Reports on Zhao's Visit to Canada
Zhao-Trudeau talks Zhao Ziyang and Pierre Trudeau agreed to increase trade and economic co-operation between the two countries during their second round of talks on 18th January. They explored the possibilities of co-operation in communications, energy " and hydropower projects which would involve technology transfer and joint ventures. Zhao on Chinese reunification: application of Hongkong policy to Taiwan Zhao Ziyang was given a rousing welcome on 18th January at a reception-sponsored by the local Chinese community. He repeated the PRC's proposals for the reunification of China and appealed for concerted efforts in a common endeavour to reunify and rejuvenate the Chinese nation. Asked at a press conference on 18th January whether China's Hongkong policy will also be applied to Taiwan, Zhao replied: "I'd like to say, first of all, that all policies towards Hongkong that we are going to adopt can also be applied to Taiwan. Zhao attends signing of insurance agreement Zhao Ziyang and Pierre Trudeau attended on 18th January the signing of the foreign investment insurance agreement between Canada and China, designed to foster increased trade and investment. An official from the Chinese delegation said that the agreement is another sign that the Chinese government "is firmly pursuing its policy of opening to the outside world in the economic field". Sino-Canadian agreements signed in Peking China and Canada signed a memorandum of understanding for a training programme in Peking on 19th January, whereby the Canadian government will arrange training placements in Canada of six months to two years' duration for Chinese personnel in key development positions. The objective is to upgrade the trainees' qualifications by filling in gaps and providing more up-to-date skills or expertise.
On 18th January, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on the China-Canada management education programme. The Chinese Ministry of Education and the Canadian International Development Agency will co-operate in strengthening the economic management courses in eight Chinese universities including the Chinese People's University and Qinghua University. The content of co-operation includes advanced studies for research personnel, training of teachers and supply of teaching equipment. (Xinhua in English 0832 gmt 19 Jan 84)
