TRADE WITH TAIWAN: SUPPER WITH LORD JELLICOE
1. Mr Hutton, OT2, Department of Trade (215 5230) telephoned me today about the following: Lord Jellicoe had returned recently from Taiwan. He had written an excellent report on our trade prospects and problems there. There would be a supper party at Warburg's on 12 September to go over the ground. Would I, or someone from my shop, like to go?
2.
I said that I would be at the Asia Working Party in Dublin and you at Ditchley. Mr Hutton said quickly that we should leave it at that: Lord Jellicoe would not want anyone more junior.
3. This seems to me the right outcome. Unless anyone disagrees, this does not appear the right moment to be seen at this particular table: we shall be in the last days of the Hong Kong negotiations. Mr Hutton indicated that the occasion would have a particular political flavour: the question would be asked why HMG was not doing more to promote links with Taiwan. Mr Hutton thought junior officials should not be faced with such questions. I think no one should.
