Dear William

DESCRIPTION OF HONG KONG IN UNIDO DOCUMENTS

1.

Thank you for your letter of 8 December drawing our attention to a corrigendum to document ID/B/294.

2. This amendment, which we presume was tabled by the Chinese delegation. does not use the officially excepted UN terminology. In fact it looks as though the formula 'the area of Hong Kong' is a mistranslation by the Chinese themsleves of the Chinese term usually translated into English as 'region'. As our political background brief (IOC/83)249) makes clear, we dislike references to 'the region of Hong Kong', which could be taken as implying that Hong Kong is a region of China.

3. We should therefore be grateful if you would approach the UNIDO Secretariat and ask them to issue a second corrigendum which would use the term 'the territory of Hong Kong'. This term was suggested by the Chinese themselves and is entirely acceptable to us.

Yours sincerely

Robert
