(d) Mr. Williamson clarified that Mr. Leeks does not represent the
United Kingdom.
(2) Resettlement Status In:
Australia
Mr. Richardson stated that Australia's resettlement programme for
1983 1984 is similar to that of 1982
-
1983.
For example, from an overall programme of 10,000 there was an offtake of 2,000 in
the S.E. Asia region, of which 800 were from Hong Kong. This drop
reflects a decline in the number of boat people leaving Vietnam.
Canada
Miss Gregson stated that Canada's government sponsorship quota has
been increased from 175 to 318. This gives an additional 143
places which has been taken from a reserve kept at Ottawa.
Denmark
Mr. Nielsen stated that of the 56 refugees rescued by Danish ships
in 1983, 34 have been presented to other countries and 22 have
been presented to Denmark. Two cases have been accepted for
family reunion and will be departing on 27 July 1983.
France
Mr. Ortoli informed the meeting that at present France is giving
preference to boat rescue cases for departure as they are given a
guarantee for resettlement in France and that the 90 days stay
limit has to be observed.
New Zealand
Mr. Shirley stated that Hong Kong does not figure very high in New
Zealand's priorities. Mr. Shirley also informed the meeting of
the three handicapped cases submitted to New Zealand by OCM Hong
Kong on humanitarian grounds and recommended that these cases be
put forward through Geneva. Mrs. Lasan confirmed that UNHCR
informs headquarters of all cases submitted locally to consulates
