VIETNAMESE REFUGEES RESCUED BY M.V. HUPEH.
1.
Thank you for copying to David Carter, my precedessor, your letter PAS 243/5 of 13 May to Mrs. Harris in the Home Office.
2. Could I ask if any progress has been made on this case? We do appreciate the difficulties, both to yourselves and to Hong Kong, but the fact remains that these refugees have now been in the Philippines, a country of First Asylum only, for over three years, and it is now a year and a half since we were prodded by the UNHCR to do something about the few refugees from this group left unsettled. We are all reminded at intervals, informally and so far with good humour, by our UNHCR contacts that our decision on the MV Hupeh case is long awaited. We assure them that it is by no means forgotten, and that we hope to have some news for them before too long - but the level of our collective embarrassment is increasing.
3.
Incidentally, we have had no reply to Christine Harrod's teleletter 928 of 17 May to you about Mrs. Tran Thi Sang. Would you please confirm that Mrs. Tran and her children remain under consideration with the rest of this group:
