Sever Me Japp

1. It was very good of you to write to my Ambassador to let him know of the satisfactory outcome of the visit of the Swedish resettlement team to Hong Kong from 14 March - 2 April to select Vietnamese refugees for settlement in Sweden. Unfortunately the Ambassador was on leave when your letter reached the Embassy but please rest assured that I shall bring it to his attention as soon as he returns to Stockholm on 5 July.

2. As one who has been concerned in the Embassy with the question of the resettlement of Vietnamce refugees in Sweden over the past couple of years or so, I share your pleasure that the visit of the Swedish delegation provided such a positive result, not least for the 206 refugees themselves, and that obviously everyone concered - yourselves, the UNHCR and the Swedish delegation worked so closely together to achieve it. I am sure that the Ambassador will endorse these sentiments.

3. It was also gratifying to note that the Swedish delegaiton does not regard this as the end of the story and that they would like to return to Hong Kong soon. I hope that this will be the case and I shall be happy to remind the Swedish MFA about it from time to time. Whilst there are obvious constraints on what a country with a population the size of Sweden can do by way of immediate practical help itself, let us hope that its swift response this time to our appeal for help (less than two months) will provide a stimulus and example to others to do more.
