HONG KONG
1. Mr Unwin telephoned to say that he had to leave today for meetings in Paris and Rome. He would be back in London on Thursday night, unless summoned to return earlier.
2.
Meanwhile, he asked that any telegrams etc. essential to the Treasury's understanding of the situation in Hong Kong should be circulated to the following small group: PS/Chancellor,
PS/Economic Secretary, Permanent Secretary, Sir T Burns, Mr Littler, Mr Unwin, Mr Lavelle.
I assume that we should also continue to keep Mr D Holland in the Bank of England informed.
3.
4. Mr Unwin remarked that the more he thought about the scheme for requiring Certificates of Indebtedness to be denominated in US dollars, in Hong Kong, the more doubts he had about it.
He was expecting a first telegram report from Mr Peretz today, and said that Mr Peretz and Mr "Goodhart would be back in England on Thursday, having completed their very rapid examination of the Hong Kong scheme.
5. I told Mr Unwin that I thought we would be asking for a call at the Treasury by Sir E Youde when he is here on Thursday and Friday. Mr Unwin confirmed that this would be a good move.
