NCNA reported on 10 January that Hong Kong's Nanyang Commercial Bank has opened a branch in the Shekou Special Industrial Zone (it already has a branch in Shenzhen). bank will provide loans for Hong Kong, Macau and foreign businessmen who wish to invest in the Zone and will "help the district in gaining exposure to the overseas market" said

Foreign Investment in Guangdong Province

The Bank of America has recently published a volume dealing with foreign investment in Guangdong in its "China Provincial Economic Briefing" series. This reveals that nearly 13,000 contracts were signed between Guangdong and foreign investors by early 1982. The vast majority (more than 12,000) were processing agreements and involved US$1,900 million in processing fees. A further 150 contracts were for compensation trade projects totalling US$12,000 million in foreign investment. The rest include joint equity ventures, cooperative management and wholly foreign-owned enterprises.

In December 1982, total exports to China amounted to $1 218 million, made up of domestic exports at $418 million and re-exports at $800 million. Imports from China were valued at $3 484 million. Compared with the same month last year, total exports to China decreased by 3.7% (an increase of 7.3% for domestic exports and a decrease of 8.6% for re-exports) and imports from China rose by 13.3%. For the year 1982, total exports to China were valued at $11 798 million (up by 7.6% over the year 1981) consisting of domestic exports at $ 3 806 million (+30.2%) and re-exports at $ 7 992 million (-0.6%) and imports from China at $32 935 million (+11.6%).

The growth rate of re-exports to China by value decreased by 0.6% for the year 1982 over 1981 compared with a 73.3% increase for the year 1981 over 1980. Re-exports of goods originating from China continued to grow fairly rapidly at 14.5%. (Please refer to the statistical appendix for details).
