(2) The estimates given by Dr Y. C. Jao are much

higher, taking the financial year 1980-81 as an example, per capita expenditure of Hong Kong residents in China is put at HK$1,244 (US$250), thus making a total of HK$4,736 million

(US$951.8 million). Both estimates made by C & 、 SD and Dr Jao respectively had left out those

Hong Kong residents who went to China via

Macao. However, it may be argued that the inclusion of these trips would not make significant difference to the estimates because

most of these trips are short and hence per

capita expenditure should not be high.

(3) According to Dr Jao's estimate, customers'

deposits with CSCBS was in the region of US$17.7

billion around the end of 1980. More exact and

more up-to-date information can be obtained from

the Banking Commissioners' Office. However, the

Banking Ordinance forbids the disclosure of such

information excepts to the Financial Secretary

and the Secretary for Monetary Affairs.
