PART VII: HONG KONG AS AN ACCESS POINT FOR CHINA

56.

(a) Technology Transfer

This is

In respect of serving as an access point for

technology transfer, Hong Kong's contribution is

belived to have been mainly in the field of hotels

and other catering trades and construction.

because tourist facilities account for quite a

substantial proportion of direct investment in China

by Hong Kong residents and Hong Kong is much more

advanced than China in this field. For

capital-intensive projects involving sophisticated

technologies, direct contacts between China and the

advanced developed countries are more usual. But in

respect of managerial and production skills and the acquisition of technology for light manufacturing industries, Hong Kong has clear advantages as a place

from which China can acquire valuable experience and knowledge.

57.

(b) Financial and Related Services

No city in China has a financial, insurance

and other related business services sector as

extensive or as well established as that in Hong

Kong. Banks, insurance companies and other firms in

Hong Kong have world-wide connections. Thus

transactions between China (particularly the SEZS) and a third country can be routed through Hong Kong

which then serves as an access point for China for

such services. Moreover Hong Kong has several

advantages as a place where China can learn what

would be required to develop financial and related

services in cities in China.
