Profit figures for financial institutions in 1976-80 are obtained from Dr Jao's paper (1981) "Hong Kong's Role in financing China's Modernization".
Profits for non-financial establishments in 1980 are taken to be equivalent to 5% of total assets at the end of 1980. Corresponding profit figures in 1976-79 are projected backwards on the basis of the 1980 figure applying the growth trend of G.D.P.
Total profit figures (financial and non-financial) for 1981 and 1982 are projected forwards on the basis of the 1980 total applying the growth trend of G.D.P.
