Notwithstanding the rapid growth rate of

Hong Kong's total exports (domestic exports and re-exports) to China, Hong Kong's trade deficit with. China (or China's trade surplus with Hong Kong)

amounted to HK$21,137 million (U$3,481 million) in

1982 compared with a rather meagre figure of HK$310 million (US$54 million) in 1952, representing a growth rate of 15% p.a. (in HK$ terms) during this

thirty year period. The growth rate of China's trade

surplus with Hong Kong has been particularly rapid,

at 22% p.a., during the last five year 1978-82

(Table 1).
