There has been some criticism in the left-wing press that

Sir J Bremridge's speech sought to argue that Hong Kong's economy

could not survive without British administration. This was actually

not mentioned in the speech, which was studiously non-political,

except for a mild reference to the "maintenance of steady and

consistent Government policies". He was also criticised for not doing enough to support the Hong Kong dollar by economic means.
