Invisible trade

2.14

Due

a

to data limitations,

quarterly

quantitative assessment of the position of invisible trade

cannot be made. Nevertheless, in two areas there are

useful indications. First, comparing the third quarter of

1983 with the same period last year, the number of

visitors coming to Hong Kong increased by 3%, while the

number of Hong Kong residents touring abroad (including

China and Macau) increased by 20%. Even taking into

account the fact that the per capita expenditure of

incoming visitors is on average higher than the per capita

expenditure of Hong Kong residents touring abroad, the net

surplus on expenditure on travel is likely to show a

deterioration. Second, as the growth of cargo movements

continued (paragraph 5.15), the net surplus on expenditure

on shipping and air transportation services

increased.
