General developments

Reflecting the significant recovery of the
export sector, the unemployment and underemployment
situation for the labour force as a whole improved. The

fell to 3.8% in
the third quarter of 1983, from 4.4% in the second quarter
and 5.1% in the first quarter

(1) According to the definition used for the General Household Survey, the unemployed population includes all persons aged 15 and over who, during the week prior to enumeration, had no work at all and were seeking work.

There are, however, signs that the unemployment situation has stabilised during the third quarter.
