Thank you for your letter of 23 July in which you asked

for my comments on correspondence you had received from Mr D Kingcome of 13a Vicarage Road, Kingfield, Woking. Mr Kingcome asks that we try to reach an amicable conclusion

to our talks with the Chinese Government on the future of

Hong Kong.

As you know, the British Government attach great importance to maintaining good and friendly relations with

China. In our talks with the Chinese on the future of Hong Kong we are seeking a settlement which will be acceptable to the British and Chinese Governments and to the people of Hong Kong. During the Prime Minister's visit to Peking last September it was agreed that the two governments had a common aim of preserving Hong Kong's stability and prosperity. Given this and our good relations, I am confident that the negotiations will be successful.

I am returning Mr Kingcome's letter to you.
