Secretary of State for Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs Foreign & Commonwealth Office

Downing Street

LONDON SW1A 2AL

Dear Sir Geoffrey

I have recently been contacted by a Mrs J Browre of Resugga Farm, St Erme.

Mrs Brown has a son who has lived in Hong Kong for the last 15 years and she came to one of my recent surgeries in order to express her disquiet with regard to the news of the negotiations with China over this particular land. As far as my constituent's son is concerned he can of course return to the United Kingdom but his mother did express some considerable concern for the Chinese on the island and wonders just what would happen to them if the Chinese were to take over. I can of course appreciate that my constituent is asking questions which nobody can conceivably answer but a general outline of the situation would be appreciated and an indication of what protection the current Hong Kong citizens may be offered.

Yours sincerely
