고
Thank you for your letter of 13 October on behalf of
Mrs J Browne of Resugga Farm, St Erme. You asked for a
general outline of the current situation on Hong Kong's
future and for an indication of what protection might be
offered for citizens of Hong Kong.
We have been holding confidential talks with the
Chinese Government with the common aim of maintaining
Hong Kong's stability and prosperity into the future.
The latest round of talks was held on 19/20 October
and was described by both sides as useful and constructive.
The next session will take place on 14/15 November,
again in Peking.
Our aim is to seek a settlement which will be
acceptable not only to Britain and China but also to the people of Hong Kong, and will provide all those who live and work there with the best possible guarantee of
continuing stability and prosperity.
