TORRY'S LETTER OF 29 JULY AND TELECON MUNRO/HUNTER ON 2 AUGUST: VISIT TO LONDON BY DR MERTES ON 12/13 SEPTEMBER
1. You may confirm that Lady Young and Mr Rifkind (Mr Luce
is unlikely to be available) are looking forward to
Dr Mertes's visit. He plans to arrive at 1500 on 12
September and leave at 1840 on 13 September.
2. Lady Young and Mr Cartledge (whom Dr Mertes knows) will
welcome a discussion of security and defence policy,
particularly how the two governments should keep in step in
the run up to the arrival of Pershing II and cruise missiles
and associated equipment. We envisage this as one of the
main subjects for the visit.
3. Mr Rifkind is looking forward to detailed discussion on
Community issues which we suggest should be the other
main topic.
4. We shall be ready to discuss the other subjects in
Torry's letter although we do not think Ministers need spend
much time on Taiwan. If time allows would Mertes alge like
to discuss Africa with Mr Rifkind?
