CONVENTION OF PEKING (1860).
PREAMBLE OF CONVENTION.
HER Majesty the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and His Imperial Majesty the Emperor of China, being alike desirous to bring to au end the misunderstanding at present existing between their respective Governments, and to secure their relations agniust further interruption, have for this purpose appointed Plenipotentiaries; that is to say, Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain and Trelaud, the Earl of ELGIN AND KINCARDINE, and His Imperial
Mejesty the Emperor of China, lis Imperial High ness the Prince of Kuso, who having met, and communicated to each other their full powers, and finding these to be in profier forum, have agreed ujion
the following Convention in Xine Articles :-

ARTICLE 1.
A breach of friudly relations having been ocensioned by the act of the garrison of Taku, which obstructed Her Britannic Majesty's Repre- sentative when on his way to Peking for the purpose of exchanging the Ratiflentions of the Treaty of Venice concluded at Tientsin in the month of June, que thoumul eight hundred and fifty-eight, liis Imperial Majesty the Emperor of China expresses his deep regret at the misunderstamling so occasioned.
