accounts was the freedom with which Wu talked to both Kissinger and Vance. He made no secret of the Chinese position and although he did not go into detail, he was by no means reticent on the general course of the talks.
I might add that the only point about John Thompson's account which I found surprising was in paragraph 6 of his letter where he recorded that Vance had told Wu that it would be very helpful if China would explain its position publicly. One of our main complaints has been that the Chinese have been doing just this at megaphone level for the past year.
