12. The Prime Minister may also wish to refer to the
question of the certification of Argentina for arms
supplies and to the the forthcoming vote on the Falklands
at the UN General Assembly. She might seek to make at
least an implicit link between our decision to retain the
garrison in Belize (if that is what is decided) and our
expectations of the Americans over the Falklands. We
trust the Americans will defer the resumption of arms
supplies at least until Argentina has formally renounced
the use of force. We also hope that even if the
Americans do not feel able to change their vote on the
Falklands at the UN, they will not take any lead in
lobbying others to vote as they do.
The Middle East
13.
American officials have told us that the President
is likely to voice his concern about the latest
developments in the Iran/Iraq conflict.
Depending on
developments the Lebanon may be very much in the
mind
forefront of the President's concern at the time of the
visit. The Prime Minister will wish to offer our support
for
to the pursuit of realistic objectives in Lebanon and to
impress on the President our concern to see an
Arab/Israel settlement.

Particularly with the approaching Commonwealth Heads
of Government meeting in mind, and in the light of any
discussion with Mr Trudeau earlier in the week, the Prime
Minister will wish to probe the President's view on the
