YOUR MINUTE OF 22 AUGUST: SECRETARY OF STATE'S BILATERALS AT 38TH UNGA
1. We recommend that we seek a bilateral meeting with Mr Hayden, Australian Foreign Minister. He will arrive in New York on 27 September and will address the General Assembly on 4 October.
2.
Since the election in March of Mr Hawke's Government there has been no meeting of senior members of the two governments. Mr Pym called off a meeting with Mr Hayden in Paris on 10 May on the announcement of the general election. No meeting was arranged during Mr Hawke's visit on the eve of the election. Since then, the Secretary of State has seen Mr Peacock, leader of the Opposition, and Mr McKellar, Opposition Foreign Affairs Spokesman.
3. A bilateral meeting with Mr Hayden in New York next month would provide an opportunity for the Secretary of State to talk about Hong Kong on which some of Mr Hayden's public statements have caused concern.
4. If Sir John Thomson gives a lunch or dinner, Father Walter Lini, Prime Minister of Vanuatu, whom the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State met in London in July, should be considered.
