2. I gave them all the usual line, and they wre all clearly aware that we would not give anything away on details of the talks. Two asked specifically whether the Prime Minister had written to Deng Xiaoping: I declined to confirm or deny. Other subjects of interest were HMG's aims, whom the Governor was representing in the talks and how long we thought they would last.
