FUTURE OF HONG KONG: COVERAGE IN THE CHINESE PRESS

237

1. Since our telno 949 of 27 September rounding up press coverage marking the last round of talks, we have reported by telegram the major commentaries and articles appearing in the Chinese press. In addition to these there have been a number of less important articles on Hong Kong matters. The readership of People's Daily is currently being exposed to more information on Hong Kong than it has been used to. It may be useful if I summarise briefly what has appeared in the last week.

2.

Various receptions to mark the Chinese national day were a rich source. (We have reported separately the points on Hong Kong in Zhao Ziyang's speech given at the state reception on 30 September. The occasion was of course given prominent press coverage.) The theme of national reunification was stressed by all who made remarks at these occasions. People's Daily of 30 September reported a reception held in Peking for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan compatriots and overseas Chinese, at which Ye Fei, Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Committee of the National People's Congress, spoke. On 2 October the paper reported various events held in Hong Kong to mark national day, including the reception hosted by Xu Jiatun on 30 September. Also reported was the 1 October reception given by the Peking Trade Unions Council at which a visiting delegation of the Hong Kong and Macao Federation of Trade Unions was present. Short reports of separate meetings between this delegation and Ji Pengfei, head of the Hong Kong and Macao Office, and Ni Zhifu, President of the all-China Federation of Trade Unions, were also carried.
