SUMMARY OF HONG KONG MEDIA COVERAGE OF FUTURE OF HONG KONG AND RELATED ISSUES, 1-17 JUNE 1983.

MAIN POINT:

1.

China's Plans to invest in Hong Kong.

Dai Jie (Director of Import and Export Department, (IED) under China's Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations and Trade told local journalists in Peking that:

(i)

IED would explore investment opportunities in Hong Kong through the China Resourees Company.

(ii)

these would be aimed at enhancing China's involvement in Hong Kong's local industrial sector.

COMMENT:

(a) Some papers thought this underlined China's support maintaining

Hong Kong's prosperity.

(b) They welcomed this recognition of the value of Hong Kong's potential in finance and technology-intensive industry.

(c) They said it would help stabilise Hong Kong's economy.

(d) Others said increased Chinese investment would have negligible

impact. Requirement was for early agreement on "the 1997 question".

(e) Many though Shanghai would lead in China's Hong Kong investment.

The state-owned Shanghai Investments Trust Coperation was exploring investment potential.

Premier Zhao, Ziyang's remarks at 6th National People's Congress. (NPC) on 6 June. (Hong Kong telno 790)

On Zhao's statement that China "would recover sovereignty over Hong Kong at an opportune moment, and would take appropriate measure to maintain Hong Kong's prosperity".

(a) Most papers emphasised this first mention of Hong Kong during
