1. We spoke about Peking telegram 644 (copy attached) which complains

about the AP report ''the Foreign Office said the Peking meeting

Tuesday would last only one day: then other negotiating sessions,

possibly at sub-committee level, will follow, Hong Kong sources

indicated''.

2. Our briefing notes, cleared with Peking and Hong Kong, included

the sentence in answer to questions on the timetable for the talks

''This particular session is likely to last for one day''. We have

of course used this line. The reference to other negotiating sessions

following at sub-committee level is sourced to Hong Kong. I attach a

suggested draft telegram pointing out that News Department have done

no more than use the line agreed with Peking and Hong Kong.
