The New Evening Post quoted the leader of a British trade delegation to China, Lord Morris, saying it would be in Britain's interests to revert sovereignty over HK to China and to conduct the diplomatic talks cordially because it was indisputable that HK was part of Chinese territory. Lord Morris, who recently made a stop-over in HK, said the Chinese people were not to be underestimated because they were capable, skilful and sincere in negotiations and he hoped that a cordial settlement could be reached on the HK question. China had no ambition to seize territory and posed no threat to western countries. The HK question could be resettled through contractual agreements.
The Ta Kung Pao Weekly Supplement for the period 10 23 February carried in condensed form (covering two pages) the article by Ding Mingnan about the "seizure" of HK by Britain. There was also a report of remarks by Mr. Deacon Chiu, who said he had full confidence in HK's future and the increasing relations between the mainland and HK investors had been beneficial to HK. He said he thought we could rest assured on HK's future; at a suitable time. he thought Beijing would make a specific announcement.
