The Chinese written response to the journalists list of questions on Hong Kong's future (see Mrs Priest's minute of 7 June refer.
(b) Mixed reaction to the Chinese statement, viz:
(i) Many papers saw special significance in Peking
having issued a written statement, ie," one in black white".
(ii)
Others thought that the statement contained nothing new and would not therefore stabilise public
confidence.
