Coverage of this was confined essentially to;

The inference in the reports of the lecture that Britain and China had proposed a "Package Deal" on Hong Kong after 1997.

The relatively gloomy picture painted by the reports of the lecture compared with the optimism expressed by the Governor in his television interview.

The fact that Hong Kong people were perplexed by the difference in emphasis, outlined in (b) above.

4. VISIT BY HONG KONG YOUNG PROFESSIONALS TO PEKING, 16/22 MAY

Wide spread coverage was given to this, as reported

separately by telegram and Mrs Priest's minute of 7 June.) The main points emerging were:

A particular welcome was given to Vice Chairman Xi Zhongxun's remarks to the young professionals that:

(i) China would handle the problem of Hong Kong carefully. (ii) She would do or say nothing to upset the territory's

prosperity or stability.

(iii) The solution to Hong Kong would do honour both to Britain

and to China.

5. VISIT TO CHINA BY HONG KONG JOURNALISTS

Less coverage given than to the young professionals. Comment
