Media Summary on Hong Kong's Future

Period: May 39, 1983

INTRODUCTION:

The main media event of the week was the announcement that 44 local people, including two former members of the Legislative Council, and three from Macau had been elected to the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Council. They were described as "HK and Macau compatriots" and "patriotic people".

The Governor spoke to the press at the opening of a water sports centre in Sai Kung on 3 May, when the HK dollar was nearing the US$1 = HK$7 level, and called on the public to be patient, believe in HK and "keep your nerve".

While Senior Unofficial Exco member, Sir S.Y. Chung, was in London, where he saw the Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary, two Conservative MPs were in HK. Before leaving on Saturday, they said the Parliamentary system would ensure that any decision on the territory's future would be acceptable to the people here.

The Guangdong nuclear power plant continued to make news locally, due mainly to the visit of the French President to China. President Mitterrand said there was agreement "in principle" that France would supply four reactors, two for the Guangdong plant and two for another plant to be built in eastern China; meanwhile, in HK, the Government announced that London merchant bankers, Lazards, would look at the feasibility of HK buying electricity from the Daya Bay plant and submit a report by August.

Mr. Wang Guangying of Ever Bright Corporation revealed that his company was being funded by the Chinese Government and the Premier had personally approved the setting up of the company.

Some time ago, a Beijing newspaper, "Tunjie Pao", printed articles which painted a black picture of HK: the latest issue of "Pai Shing" reprinted the articles, with an editor's note speculating that one reason for publishing articles which criticised HK in Chinese newspapers could be to deter illegal immigrants.
