ABSTRACT
This paper examines recent developments in Chinese-British negotia-
tions over the future of Hong Kong and American interest in those talks.
It shows that while the United States has an important economic stake in
the future of Hong Kong, current circumstances appear to limit U.S. ability
to influence developments there.
